“The Afghan Refugee Women”
Samira Makhmalbaf proceeded with photography for a whole month in the autumn of 2000 in the borders of Iran and Afghanistan between Zabol in Iran and Nimrouz in Afghanistan. These pictures, which were about Afghan refugees and especially refuge women, where exhibited in the Cannes Film festival of 2001 in France.
At the same time in May 12 and 13 the l'Humanit頨French newspaper) & Hamshahri (Iranian newspaper) printed a few of these photographs. In reply to the French reporters in Cannes 2001 regarding the photographs Samira said: " The Afghan women, which I have tried to reveal to you and themselves are beautiful and infatuated by beauty despite their covers. Although they hide themselves under the dark concealed burqas (veils) but you could see their beauty and their love for beauty in the colors of their burqas (veils). These are portraits of 10 millions of Afghan women whom have even forgotten their own image because they haven't been seen for a long time. "
